Dates are the oldest cultivated fruit in the world, thought to be indigenous to Northern Africa and the Mediterranean. Their name originates from the Greek word daktulos meaning finger, thus alluding to their shape. Dates are nowadays very popular due to their exquisite nutritional profile. 

Dates are very sweet (containing 55% sugar while fresh, becoming much more concentrated when dried), and mixed with water they are the perfect sugar substitute. They offer an excellent natural source of energy. Unlike refined carbohydrates, the level of energy will not drop soon after dates are consumed. Since sugar from dates is naturally connected with soluble fiber, therefore sugar release is much slower.
