Dates are the oldest cultivated fruit in the world, thought to be indigenous to Northern Africa and the Mediterranean. Their name originates from the Greek word daktulos, meaning finger, thus alluding to their shape. Dates are nowadays very popular due to their exquisite nutritional profile. 

Dates are very sweet (containing 55% sugar while fresh, becoming much more concentrated when dried), and mixed with water, they are the perfect sugar substitute. They offer an excellent natural source of energy. Unlike refined carbohydrates, the level of energy will not drop soon after dates are consumed. All due to the fact that sugar from dates is naturally connected with soluble fibre, therefore, sugar release is much slower. 

Suggested use:

Dates can be easily chopped and diced without becoming too mushy due to their drier nature. They can be used in bakery foods such as breads, raw cakes and cookies, added to cereals or eaten as a healthy snack. Perfect alternative for artificial sweets.
