Black Salt, also known as Kala Namak and Sanchal is a special sort of mineral-rich salt harvested in Pakistan and India.
With its pronounced aroma, black salt will add a unique note to salads, chutneys and other traditional Indian dishes. It is often used in marinades, sauces and stews.
Despite its name, black salt has a dusky pink colour and a very distinctive smell. The sulfur compounds cause the salt to smell like hard-boiled eggs.
Obtained from volcanic regions of Pakistan and India where it is mostly used as a seasoning, its popularity grows rapidly in the western world, most notably in vegan and vegetarian recipes.
