Nutrigold recommends organic panela, a type of unrefined whole cane sugar obtained by highly controlled sugar-producing methods.

Like white and brown sugar, panela is a sugar cane product. Since panela is unrefined, it contains molasses, a dark brown substance found in sugar cane leaves. Molasses gives the panela its brown colour, lumpy and somewhat sticky texture. 

Besides eye-catching differences, panela is considered a healthier sugar choice for its nutritional value and for retaining some of the nutrients traditionally lost during the process of sugar processing.

Due to its slightly coarser texture, panela can be used in smaller quantities when compared to white sugar.
