Arrowroot powder is a white powder without flavour, mostly used in cooking and baking as a thickener and is an excellent substitute for corn flour. The powder consists of starch extracted from various tropical tubers such as arrowroot and cassava.
Arrowroot is also used as an ingredient in natural skincare.
Nutrigold arrowroot powder is gaining in popularity (at least in the Western world) as people are looking for alternatives to cornstarch, either due to corn allergies and sensitivities or to avoid anything GMO and pesticide-laden.
It is gluten and protein-free and has very low levels of fat. Arrowroot has twice stronger thickening power than cornflour. Flavourless as is, it can be seamlessly added to savoury dishes and baked goods.
Can be used in baking, roasting and frying. Use cold water to make a mash and prevent coagulation. Always add the slurry at the very end of the recipe. You don’t really want to cook with arrowroot as it will break down at higher temperatures, so stir in right before serving. Arrowroot holds up beautifully when used with acidic ingredients or frozen, so feel free to batch cook and freeze your recipes.
